From Competing ‘ALT’ Brands To Zero In N.Y.’s Capital District

TROY, N.Y. — In March 2018, an “ALT” war erupted in New York’s Capital District, as Townsquare Media and Pamal Broadcasting each debuted Alternative Rock radio stations with identical branding on FM radio stations serving Albany, Schenectady, and the cities and towns surrounding them.

By summer 2019, Townsquare put its “ALT” on pause for a month before moving it to a signal once, and now, home to a Classic Rock format: WQBK. This left Pamal alone in the region, aside from a storied Vermont independent Alternative that can be heard in parts of the Albany area.

As of today, that Vermont property is now the lone Alternative that can be heard in the 518 area code, as Pamal has opted to instead take on Townsquare with a Country-fueled format battle.
