WASHINGTON, D.C. — It’s hurricane season, and the FCC is helping broadcasters and the general public prepare by hosting a Hurricane Season Resiliency Roundtable, led by its Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, in early July.
The goal of the gathering is to provide “a timely venue to promote resiliency and recovery efforts.” The roundtable, scheduled for July 07 from 9:30am-12:30pm at FCC Headquarters, will focus on collaboration between communications service providers, electric utilities, and emergency management officials.
“Panelists will share best practices related to preparedness and response; highlight the importance of collaboration between these critical sectors; and apply lessons learned to identify practical next steps,” the Commission said.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr commented, “As we head into this year’s hurricane season, the FCC is focused on the work necessary to keep networks running and to promote quick restoration in the case of outages. Promoting collaboration between communications, electric power, and emergency management officials is one of the key ways the FCC can help ensure these outcomes. That is why I am pleased to convene this timely roundtable.”
The roundtable will include three panel sessions. Each panel will include representatives from the communications and power sectors and government agencies, including state and local emergency managers.
- Panel 1: Challenges to Response and Recovery of Power and Communications Outages in the Aftermath of a Hurricane will discuss the most common and pressing on-the-ground challenges for communications providers and electric utilities in coordinating and restoring service after a hurricane.
- Panel 2: Current Government, Intra-Industry, and Cross-Industry Partnerships will focus on existing collaboration between power and communications stakeholders to respond to threats to power and communications infrastructure posed by hurricanes and what opportunities may exist for further collaboration and partnership.
- Panel 3: The Advance Preparation Frameworks for Power and Communications Outages will examine best practices and established preparatory frameworks that have demonstrated effectiveness in speeding up recovery or minimizing damage to power and communications infrastructure after a hurricane.
This event is free and open to the public. A live stream will be available at www.fcc.gov/live
