FCC Asked To OK Canadian FM’s Frequency Shift

0

What jurisdiction does the FCC possess to move forward with the proposed change in FM frequencies for two stations, including a Canadian operation?

Plenty, it turns out, as this Canadian FM is actually licensed to a small Texas town.

A Petition for Rulemaking from Hispanic Target Media Inc. has been submitted for consideration by the Commission seeking its approval to substitute a Class C1 facility at 104.9 MHz for the vacant 94.9 MHz.

This would result in the move of KPQP-FM from 106.1 MHz, licensed to Panhandle, Tex., 73 miles to the southwest, to 94.9 MHz, where it would have a Class C3 facility.

The latter move would allow KPQP, branded as “Radio Amigo,” to increase its service area from 28,674 persons to nearly 145,400, its owner asserts.

The plan warrants consideration, Assistant Audio Division Chief Nazifa Sawez says. But, public input is needed.
