WASHINGTON, D.C. — In November 2021, CBS News selected its 16-month EVP and CBS News Washington bureau chief to serve in a role giving her editorial oversight for network newsgathering worldwide, including all domestic and international bureaus.

Then. in August 2023, she rose from the role of EVP of Newsgathering to CBS News President. Now, she’s out.

According to various media reports, Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews is resigning from the post she’s held for the last 2 1/2 years.

While Ciprian-Matthews will relinquish her position as CBS News President, staff members were told on Wednesday she will serve as a consultant in the role of Senior Advisor through the 2024 U.S. presidential race.

The New York Post obtained a copy of the staff memo distributed by Ciprian-Matthews to all within CBS News. She said, “No journalist wants to ‘be’ the news, especially me. But today, I have some news of my own to share. After much consideration, I’ve decided this is the right time to step away from my current role at CBS News and begin to write my next chapter.”

Ciprian-Matthews joined CBS News in 1993 as a senior producer for live segments for the morning news. Before that, Ciprian-Matthews was the managing editor of CNN’s New York bureau (1990-1993) and a field producer, assignment manager and assignment editor for CNN (1984-1990). She started her career as a general assignment reporter for the National Public Radio Spanish-language news program “Enfoque Nacional.”

In Washington, Ciprian-Matthews was responsible for CBS News’ campaign coverage during the 2020 conventions, presidential debates, Election Night and the CBS News Decision Desk. Before that, Ciprian-Matthews served as an EVP for CBS News in 2018 and EVP of strategic professional development in 2019, where she focused on recruiting and elevating high-potential journalists.

Ciprian-Matthews is a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

To our readers: An earlier version of this story included details of a lawsuit filed against CBS and Paramount Global by former KCBS-2 and KCAL-9 news anchor Jeff Vaughn on the grounds that he was a victim of discrimination on the basis of race and age. Per CBS’s request, this has been removed from our article as Ciprian-Matthews is not named in the lawsuit, which was filed July 1. We apologize for any inferences that Ciprian-Matthews is exiting as a direct result of the lawsuit.
