Comment Period Opens On VHF-to-UHF Plan

The new Video Division Chief within the FCC’s Media Bureau has opened up a comment period for a proposal that would see a PBS Kansas facility shift from a VHF channel to a UHF position — a move that would upgrade the station serving the Hutchinson market.

A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking has been put into motion that would allow KPTS-8 to shift from VHF Channel 8 to UHF Channel 33.

This, PBS Kansas asserts, would improve signal reception for viewers and resolve “a long history” of viewer reception issues following its digital conversion.

The proposed move is not predicted to create a loss of service to any viewers, and Video Division Chief David J. Brown is moving forward with a comment and reply comment period. Comments will be due 30 days after the NPRM is published in the Federal Register; reply comments are due 45 days from such date.
