In the 117th Congress, one of the NAB’s key legislative missions was for Congressional passage of the “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act,” a bill that would compensate creators of local news for its dissemination across social media platforms including Facebook. It died before any “lame duck” vote could be held, and thus far in the 118th Congress, there’s little discussion of a reintroduction of the “JCPA.”

For news creators in the Golden State, however, a Oakland-based Democrat serving California’s 15th State Assembly District may have just introduced a bill that could bring to them what Congress failed to do.
