A Purchase In Providence Solidifies Tropical Vibe

On Nov. 19, 2017, an AM radio station with a pair of FM translators brought a New England metropolis once known for its Portuguese speakers a new choice for Latin Urban and current Tropical hits.

The stations operate under the “Mega 94.9” brand, and the party that has controlled the facilities via an LMA is now purchasing them outright.

Radio Sharon Communications is the company that runs WSTL-AM 1220 and FM translator W229AN at 93.7 MHz. It also has the license for W235CN at 94.9 MHz in Providence, R.I.

WSTL and W229AN are the subject of this transaction, as Radio Sharon is acquiring them from New England Christian Media for $240,000.

An earnest money deposit of $100,000 has been made to the buyer by Radio Sharon, headed by Francisco Perdomo and President Nelson Diaz, the 100% shareholder in Radio Sharon.

WSTL is a Class D facility using 1 tower with 1kw during daylight hours and 166 watts at night. W229AN covers the immediate Providence metropolitan area.

FM translator W235CN is licensed directly to Radio Sharon Foundation. It was acquired in May 2016 from Mercer County Community College and trucked in to Providence all the way from Chatsworth, N.J. — within the 250 mile translator filing window established by the FCC.

The arrival in fall 2017 of “Mega 94.9” followed several months of silence, following the closure of Christian-themed “Shine 1220.”

Mega 94.9 competes with Class A WKKB-FM “Latina 100.3,” coming from the southeast in Middletown, R.I.; and WPMZ-AM 1110 “Poder,” an East Providence-based facility using W271CR at 102.1 MHz to reach Providence, Pawtucket and Cranston.
