A Former Radio Station Home Is Poised For New Housing

BOSTON — A multifamily residential building is being proposed for a site on the west bank of the Malden River in suburban Medford, Mass., that until 20 years ago served as the home of one of the nation’s most iconic Top 40 stations and its AM sibling.

Criterion Development Partners hopes the commercial land at 97-99 Revere Beach Parkway, adjacent to the Wellington Orange Line T stop north of Faneuil Hall and downtown Boston, will be transformed into a 276-unit apartment building.

Longtime local radio industry leaders may recognize that street address as the former home of WXKS-AM and “Kiss 108.”

The Boston Business Journal says “The Residences at Wellington Station” would take shape on the property, which stood vacant for much of the 2000s and as of May 2025 still bears the Total Traffic + Weather signage of yesteryear. Tractor-trailers were seen parked across the surface-level lot in front of the building, which is just east of a fashionable area full of stores and restaurants.

The existing structure and broadcast towers would be demolished, with a six-story residential building taking its place. Ground-floor retail shops are included in the design, as is underground parking. An entry point to a public waterfront park on the Malden River connecting to a greenway is also in the works.

WXKS is today an iHeartMedia station and is based one block north, at Rivers Edge Drive and Cabot Road.
