ZoneCasting Now Fully Permissible Under FCC Rules

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The use of a FM booster station to originate programming in order to bring Geo Broadcast Services’ ZoneCasting technology to its full fruition is now wholly allowable for those operators who wish to invest in it.

Thanks to the publication in the Federal Register on Friday of the notice of the effective date for modified sections 73.3526, 73.3527, and 74.1204, as amended in the Geocasting Second R&O, as well as the effective date of new section 74.1206, FM and LPFM stations must now use FCC Form 2100, Schedule 336 to notify the Commission of the initiation of voluntary, limited use of FM booster stations to originate content on a permanent basis.

This follows the earlier late December 2024 publication of the FCC’s Second Report and Order on Consideration in the Federal Government’s publication of record. At that time, however, only ZoneCasting rules concerning compliance with emergency alert system requirements, permissible service parameters, licensing requirements, and political programming took effect.

With the July 25 Federal Register publication, rules associated with new or modified information collection requirements that require approval by the Office of Management and Budget under the Paperwork Reduction Act are now codified.
