WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. — The NBC affiliate serving South Florida since its sign-on 71 years ago has a new News Director, and it is welcoming an individual who is relocating from The E.W. Scripps Co.‘s ABC-affiliated sibling in Tampa-St. Petersburg, where he was Asst. ND.

Earning the ND post at WPTV-5 is Mark Zonca. But, he won’t take the role until October 6.
“Mark will be integral to our focus of listening to our communities and the news team, leading through empathy and delivering the news that matters most to our community,” said Bill Siegel, who serves as WPTV’s VP/GM. “His experience managing large teams, deep knowledge of Florida news coverage including hurricane response, and collaborative leadership approach make him the perfect fit for WPTV.”

Zonca has been overseeing the day-to-day execution of Scripps Content Strategy at WFTS for more than five years. There, he led editorial meetings, managed investigative teams and special projects, and coached newsroom journalists. He also collaborated with news managers and Scripps’ creative team to successfully execute a complete station rebrand.

Prior to WFTS, Zonca served as a morning executive producer at WFLD-TV in Chicago and also as a Managing Editor at WGN-TV. He also served in strategic communications roles at Illinois Institute of Technology and Benedictine University.
