As of now, it is a student-run radio station at Columbus Career & College Academy in tiny Whiteville, N.C., between Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Lumberton, N.C., a popular halfway point for drivers between Florida and New York.
Pending FCC approval, however, this Class C2 FM will be joining the North Carolina Public Radio family.
WZCO-FM 89.9, licensed to Chadbourn, N.C., is being sold by the academy to WUNC Public Radio through Columbus County Schools.
It’s a $50,000 transaction, and includes the lease agreement for the WZCO tower.
A $5,000 escrow deposit has been made; there is no broker or finder associated with the transaction.
For WUNC Public Radio, the addition of WZCO fills a coverage hole for WUNC Public Radio. Locally, South Carolina Public Radio and Wilmington-focused WHQR Public Media offer NPR Member stations to the Chadbourn area and surrounding communities.
In Lumberton, WUNC Public Media has had an FM translator at 94.1 MHz; now, it will cover not only Lumberton but also Elizabethtown and Lake Waccamaw.
