With vMVPD Retrans A Hot Topic, YouTubeTV Is Surging

For years, the “cord-cutting” story has permeated the broadcast television business, with “FAST” channels hastening a long-term erosion in paid subscriber rolls for Multichannel Video Programming Distributors — today’s terminology for the cable TV company.


With a big shift to digital delivery of the programming Americans view, broadcast TV affiliate station owners have teamed up to demand Congressional action that would extend retransmission consent to the virtual MVPD. The “Big Four” networks, and cable TV services providers and their lobbying groups, are vehemently against this idea.

But, as cord-cutting has not relented, one vMVPD has continued to add new subscribers in a big way. And, the National Football League’s Sunday Ticket is a key reason why that’s transpired.
