Weigel Acquires A TEGNA LPTV Property

A Class A digital television facility serving the Norfolk area from Yorktown, Va., is being sold to the company behind the MeTV classic television brand and is related Oldies radio format.

Weigel Broadcasting, through its TV-49 Inc. subsidiary, has agreed to purchase WYSJ-CD in Yorktown, Va.

The seller? Look no further than TEGNA, which is shedding the property through its WVEC Television LLC operation.

A $675,000 purchase price was agreed to on April 7, and the deal sees Greg Guy of Tideline Partners LLC serve as TEGNA’s broker of record.

WYSJ, at Channel 19, was acquired along with WJSJ-LD 39 by TEGNA in March 2022 for a combined price of $1.15 million. The acquisition of the properties from Jacobs Broadcasting System was done expressly to allow TEGNA to facilitate a VHF-to-UHF shift for its ABC affiliate in Norfolk, WVEC-13. That transpired, with TEGNA moving WVEC to digital channel 35 while retaining its PSIP of channel 13.

For TEGNA, neither WYSJ nor WJSJ are considered strategic, core assets; WYSJ has had intermittent periods of non-operation over the last two years.

RBR+TVBR hears WJSJ is also for sale, although TEGNA is not actively seeking a buyer for the low-power facility.
