Week 23: NBC law programming line-up solid

Led by “The Office,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Parks and Recreation” and “30 Rock,” NBC averaged a 1.5 rating, 4 share in adults 18-49 and 5.0 million viewers overall for the week of February 21-27, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.


Primetime averages for the week of February 21-27 in adults 18-49 were Fox (3.6/10), ABC (3.3/9), CBS (2.3/7), NBC (1.5/4) and CW (0.9/2). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were ABC (10.7 million), CBS (10.4 million), Fox (10.3 million), NBC (5.0 million) and CW (2.0 million).

NBC highlights for the week of February 21-27:

* On Tuesday, “Parenthood” ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in the 10 p.m. ET hour in adults 18-49 and other key demographics.

* “Parenthood” was up week-to-week by 11 percent in adults 18-49 and 8 percent in total viewers, to deliver its best results in both measures since February 1.

* The “Parenthood” results are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week. Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “Parenthood” has added an average 42 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results, making it the #2 biggest gainer among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW.

* Also on Tuesday, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” gained 45 percent in adults 18-49 and 35 percent or more than 2.2 million persons in total viewers from its first half-hour to its fourth in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “Glee,” CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA” and ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” and “V.”

* On Wednesday, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” won its slot in adults 18-49 and other key demographics. “SVU” topped the second week of CBS’s “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” in adults 18-49 after the new CBS drama won the slot one week earlier in primetime’s key demo by a 50 percent margin. Week-to-week, “SVU” was up 14 percent in adults 18-49 and 10 percent in total viewers.

* On Thursday, “Parks and Recreation” was up versus the prior week by 9 percent in adults 18-49 and 6 percent in total viewers despite competition this week from “American Idol.” “Parks” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in its half-hour in adults 18-34 and key male demographics, behind only “American Idol,” and ahead of “CSI” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

* Also on Thursday, “30 Rock” was up week to week by 15 percent in adults 18-49 and 11 percent in total viewers. “30 Rock” ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in its time period in adults 18-34 and key male demos versus ABC’s “Private Practice” and CBS’s “The Mentalist.”

* Additionally on Thursday, “The Office” finished #1 in its time period in men 18-34 ahead of Fox’s “American Idol,” ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS’s “CSI.”

Among all primetime programs this week, “The Office” ranked #15 (tied) in adults 18-49, #6 in adults 18-34 and #4 in men 18-34, behind only the Wednesday edition of “American Idol” and ABC’s Sunday Academy Awards programming.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

Additional NBC highlights for the week of February 21-27:

On Monday, Feb. 21 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Chuck” averaged a 1.7 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 5.5 million viewers overall. “Chuck” attracted its biggest overall viewership since January 31. It’s worth noting that through the first 20 weeks of the season, “Chuck” has added an average 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure

Monday at 9 p.m. ET, “The Cape” averaged a 1.2/3 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall. “The Cape” has added an average 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

Monday at 10 p.m. ET, “Harry’s Law” averaged a 1.7/5 in 18-49 and 8.7 million viewers overall. “Harry’s Law” maintained its 18-49 rating of the prior week and increased 3 percent in total viewers (8.746 million vs. 8.511 million).

Since its debut on January 17, “Harry’s Law” has earned NBC’s six best 18-49 ratings in the time period since November 1, 2010 and attracted the network’s six biggest overall audiences in the slot, excluding Olympics, in 17 months (since September 14, 2009). The February 21 “Harry’s Law” was up 13 percent in 18-49 rating (1.7 vs. 1.5) and up 71 percent in total viewers (8.746 million vs. 5.103 million) versus NBC’s non-sports average in this slot during the traditional 2009-10 season.

On Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” averaged a 2.7/8 in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “Glee,” CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA” and ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” and “V.”

From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Biggest Loser” gained 45 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 3.2 rating from a 2.2), 44 percent in adults 25-54 (3.9 vs. 2.7) and 35 percent or more than 2.2 million persons in total viewers (to 8.7 million from 6.5 million).

Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, “Parenthood” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 5.5 million viewers overall) ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 and other key demographics with its best 18-49 and total-viewer results since February 1. “Parenthood” also ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in the hour in adults, men and women 18-34 and women 18-49.

Versus the prior week, “Parenthood” was up 11 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.1 rating from a 1.9) and 8 percent in total viewers (5.531 million vs. 5.115 million).

These “Parenthood” results are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week of February 21-27. Through the season’s first 20 weeks, “Parenthood” added an average 42 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results. On a percentage basis, “Parenthood” is the #2 biggest gainer in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven” among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW, behind only Fox’s “Fringe” (+43 percent). In total viewers, “Parenthood” is the #1 biggest gainer in terms of percentage increase in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day,” adding an average 37 percent, or 2.0 million persons going to 7.2 million from 5.2 million.

On Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “Minute To Win It” averaged a 1.0/3 in adults 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period that included Fox’s two-hour “American Idol,” CBS’s “Survivor” and “Criminal Minds” and ABC’s “The Middle” and “Modern Family.”

Wednesday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.5/7 in adults 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and other key demographics. “SVU” topped the second week of CBS’s “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior” in adults 18-49 (2.5 vs. 2.4) after the new CBS drama had won the slot one week earlier by a 50 percent margin (3.3 vs. 2.2).

Week-to-week, “Law & Order; SVU” was up 14 percent in 18-49 rating (2.5 vs. 2.2) and 10 percent in total viewers (8.019 million vs. 7.307 million). From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew by 4 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 2.5 from a 2.4) and 3 percent in total viewers (to 8.148 million from 7.890 million), while rival dramas on ABC and CBS declined half-hour to half-hour in both measures.

Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” added an average 28 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure. In total viewers, “SVU” has added an average 19 percent or more than 1.6 million persons in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day.”

On Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-8:30 p.m. ET, “Community” delivered a 1.8/5 in 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” and ABC’s “Winter Wipeout.” Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “Community” added an average 25 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET, “Perfect Couples” averaged a 1.4/4 in 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers overall in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” and ABC’s “Winter Wipeout.”

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, “The Office” (3.3/9 in adults 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) finished #1 in the time period in men 18-34 ahead of Fox’s “American Idol,” ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS’s “CSI.”

These results for “The Office” are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week of February 21-27. Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “The Office” added an average 31 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure. On a percentage basis, “The Office” is tied as the #1 biggest gainer from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven, ” tied with “Modern Family,” among all half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox or CW. “The Office” is also the #1 biggest percentage gainer in total viewers among all half-hour comedies, gaining 27 percent or 2.0 million viewers (to 9.5 million from 7.5 million).

Thursday from 9:31-10 p.m. ET, “Parks and Recreation” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall) ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49, behind only “American Idol,” and ahead of “CSI” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“Parks and Recreation” was up versus the prior week by 9 percent in 18-49 rating (2.4 vs. 2.2) and 6 percent in total viewers (4.6 million vs. 4.3 million) despite competition this week from “American Idol.”

Thursday from 10-10:31 p.m. ET, “30 Rock” (2.3/6 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49 versus ABC’s “Private Practice” and CBS’s “The Mentalist.” In its six weeks with first-run episodes in the Thursday 10-10:30 p.m. half-hour, “30 Rock” has generated NBC’s six highest 18-49 and total-viewer results in the time period this season.

Versus the prior week, “30 Rock” was up 15 percent in 18-49 rating (2.3 vs. 2.0) and 11 percent in total viewers (4.501 million vs. 4.072 million).

Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “30 Rock” added an average 29 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure, making it the #3 biggest gainer on a percentage basis among half-hour comedies, behind only “The Office” and “Modern Family.”

Thursday from 10:31-11 p.m. ET, “Outsourced” averaged a 1.4/4 in adults 18-49 and 3.3 million viewers overall. “Outsourced” ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in men 18-34. Through the first 20 weeks of the season, “Outsourced” added an average 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure. On a percentage basis, “Outsourced” is the #1 biggest gainer going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven” among all first-year half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox or CW.

On Friday, Feb. 25 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Who Do You Think You Are?” averaged a 1.2/4 in 18-49 and 6.2 million viewers overall. In its hour, “Who Do You Think You Are?” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49 (tied) and total viewers and was #1 among women 25-54. Versus the prior week, “Who Do You Think You Are?” was up 4 percent in total viewers (6.182 million vs. 5.922 million).

Friday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” averaged a 1.4/4 in 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers overall. From its first hour to its second, “Dateline” grew by 15 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.5 from a 1.3) and 17 percent in adults 25-54 (2.1 vs. 1.8).

On Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Harry’s Law” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in the hour among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in total viewers and adults, men and women 25-54. At 9 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “Law & Order: Los Angeles” averaged a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall.

Saturday from 10-11 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in from the previous hour by 60 percent in 18-49 rating and by 25 percent in total viewers.

On Sunday, Feb. 27, from 7-9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Dateline NBC” averaged a 0.8/2 in 18-49 and 4.7 million viewers overall. From 8-9:03 p.m. a rebroadcast of “Minute To Win It” averaged a 0.7/2 and 2.7 million viewers overall.

From 9:03-10:06 p.m. ET, an encore broadcast of “Minute To Win It” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 3.7 million) built on its lead-in from the previous hour by 71 percent in 18-49 rating and 39 percent in total viewers. From 10:06-11:08 p.m., another rebroadcast of “Minute To Win It” delivered a 0.8/2 in 18-49 and 2.5 million viewers overall.
