The Weigel Broadcasting Co. non-affiliated television station that serves as the broadcast home for two pro sports teams has just been added to the streaming lineup for DirecTV in the Chicago DMA.

WCIU-TV, branded as “The U,” debuted as a DirecTV streaming channel offering on Thursday, and Weigel calls it a “strategic move” that reflects WCIU’s “commitment to adapting to the evolving ways audiences consume television and ensures that more households can enjoy the station’s lineup of entertainment and live sports.”

WCIU has already been available to DirecTV satellite and local U-verse customers. However, in an era of cord-cutting, “skinny bundles” and virtual MVPDs, DirecTV streaming access is more essential than ever for broadcasters.

For WCIU, getting on DirecTV streaming also ensures that fans of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky and Major League Baseball’s Chicago White Sox can tune in watch each team’s respective games. There is also high school sports, IHSA football and girls and boys basketball state championships, and girls high flag football finals on the WCIU lineup.

WCIU-26 can also be found on all major MVPDs in Chicago and on both YouTube TV and FuboTV.
