First, any radio people passing through Or close to Orangeburg SC, listen in (WORG is at 100.3) …Our town is along I-26, and U.S. 301/601 and not far from I-95. At 25Kw we have pretty good coverage. The stream usually works, worg.com, another easy way to check out l o c a l radio, and if I must say so myself, done right. We are a locally owned, standalone, which can be a challenge, but since we are the only locally owned station, and everyone working here is from here, that does make it a bit easier.
I see and hear about many stations in financial trouble, one way I think to make a good living would be to own one or two stations in a small market (hopefully one without a daily paper) where you are the voice of the town-and/or community. Now, not to sound contradictory, it would have to be an area big enough to support the stations, and its important, along or close to an interstate. This seems to attract enough industry etc to bring in enough people and jobs which of course in turn drives the local economy. The second is be prepared to do much of it yourself, and keep it local. No satellite programming, except maybe for a 7-midnight, John Tesh-like show. There are enough ex-radio people out there, believe me, to lay down some voice tracks for a bit of extra income and wanting to keep their hands in the biz.
You also personally have to be involved, become a chamber of Commerce member, go to their gatherings, be willing to bend on the Rates and give good, no –not good-great client service. More tips at another time or by contacting yours truly. I’ve learned something in 40 years at this.
