In 1986, an AM radio station serving San Antonio took on a format focused specifically on a regional music style that was growing in popularity: Tejano.
Five years later, in 1991, the format moved to KXTN-FM 107.5, and rode a wave of success fueled by the life — and death — of Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla. It led Univision Communications to buy KXTN-AM & FM in 2003.
Now, Univision has brought Tejano back to its roots by shifting it to the AM dial. What’s in its place on the FM dial?
Introducing “VIBE 107.5,” and new calls KVBH-FM.
Univision is describing VIBE as a “Hot Adult Rhythmic Contemporary” station featuring pop, hip-hop and R&B music from the 1980s through the early 2000s.
This means VIBE will be an English-language station in a heavily Hispanic market influenced by rhythmic hits made famous in the market on KTFM, at 102.7 MHz.
“We are excited to launch a brand-new format that reflects the distinct musical tastes of our community here in San Antonio—one of the most diverse in the nation,” said Univision/San Antonio VP/GM Chris Morris. “By reformatting and optimizing our audio portfolio we’re able to better serve our audience and give them more of the content they love.”
Taking the Tejano format is the HD signal of KXTN-FM and KXTN-AM, formerly known as KCOR-AM 1350. This is the station widely regarded as the nation’s first 24/7 station serving Spanish-language listeners in a U.S. market, founded in 1946 by Raoul Cortez.
The Medallas de Cortez awards are named after the station’s founder.
As part of the reprogramming, the Univision Deportes Radio programming formerly heard on KXTN-AM shifts to the HD3 signal of the company’s regional Mexican KROM-FM 92.9.
