Social Media Content Moderation: Total User Control?

0

Social media content moderation has stirred controversies for a number of years. Just look at the quiet death to the “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act,” championed by the NAB and saved by author Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) after Texas Republican Ted Cruz nearly torpedoed it over one key topic: content moderation on social media.

“You should not be negotiated on content moderation and how you are going to censor substantive content,” Cruz emphasized in September 2023. Now, “Fake news” on social media, decried as a threat to democracy, is a subject nonresident senior American Enterprise Institute fellow Mark Jamison is speaking out about. He argues that giving users greater control of social media content moderation may be the best approach for ensuring misinformation is prevented from any mass dissemination.
