ACA / American Cable AssociationThe increased cost of doing business has forced a shake-out among cable companies.

High programming costs have caused some 1,000 small and rural cable companies to go out of business, over the past seven years, reports MediaPost.

The FCC and the American Cable Association say 47 cable operators closed 91 systems in 2014.

The ACA says programming costs for smaller cable systems grew more than 10% a year between 2010 to 2015, according to SNL Kagan.
