NEW YORK — With activity ramping up and 5G-MAG actively engaging in industry conversations, a vote on forming a dedicated 5G Broadcast 5G-MAG workgroup is set for December, the 5G Broadcast Collective has shared.
“Anticipating the initiative’s approval, we can anticipate accelerated advancements in 5G Broadcast technology—paving the way for significant breakthroughs,” notes Mehul Agarwhal, Editor of the 5G Broadcast Collective’s member newsletter, in a communiqué released this week.
In line with this promise of global interoperability, the Frank Copsidas-founded XGen Network (XGN) has released the first draft of Receiver Standards for 5G Broadcast devices, (which can be viewed by clicking here.). Agarwhal notes, “This proposal builds on the foundational standards set by the European 5G Broadcast Handset Task Force, proposing the adoption of the full Band 108 (470 MHz – 698 MHz) to achieve seamless global compatibility. While Band 107 (612 MHz – 652 MHz)—a subset of Band 108—offers a great potential for European tests, its deployment is restricted in the U.S. due to limited access to the 600 MHz range, making a broader standard essential.”
While Agarwhal belives Band 107 offers “a promising start, given its proximity to Band 71 (already widely used in cell),” he argues, “It is increasingly clear that adopting Band 108 as the standard will better serve global integration goals. A universal standard not only simplifies implementation but also empowers OEMs with the flexibility to adapt frequencies within Band 108 for specific regional needs. This broader approach to standardization could be simpler and more efficient than revising Band 107 to meet the demands of a global 5G Broadcast rollout requiring Band 108.”
