Scripps News Revs Up Live Programming Schedule

On January 1, 2023, Newsy disappeared. That’s not to say the channel focused on in-depth news reporting, minus political commentary, went away. Rather, it was rebranded as Scripps News, a sign that The E.W. Scripps Co., with its roots in the newspaper business, was further committing to delivery of information and the day’s top stories for a television audience.

Now, Scripps is putting more fuel into Scripps News as it seeks to further attract audiences from not only over-the-air choices but also a reinvigorated NewsNation at a time when CNN and FOX News may each be at their most vulnerable.

Starting Monday, May 1, Scripps News will produce all live news programming weekdays from 6am to 10pm Eastern.

And, Scripps is launching a marketing campaign — its first since the Newsy rebrand — to help lure viewers while sending the message that it serious about building a 24/7 news operation even further.

As E.W. Scripps Co. sees it, Scripps News is “the nation’s only 24/7 TV news network available for free over the air.” Technically, this may be correct. However, the man behind 5 Hour Energy beverages — Manoj Bhargava — has funded the growth of the Vince Bodiford-led NewsNet as a digital multicast network using a news format much like what CNN Headline News brought to cable TV viewers more than 30 years ago.

Scripps News is also a digital multicast channel, and Scripps News President Kate O’Brian says the expansion of live news programming is coming ahead of schedule.

“Our goal with Scripps News was to produce continuous live news programming within two years of our launch,” she commented. “We’re now ahead of that schedule, producing all live news Monday through Friday, and news cut-ins on the weekends. Viewership numbers show this is what our consumers want – more live news – and with this change, viewers will now receive 16 hours of non-stop live programming daily.”

Scripps News journalists will operate out of a headquarters operation based in Atlanta, with 16 news bureaus across the U.S.

The Scripps News Washington Bureau will continue to cover the capital and produce investigative and enterprise stories for all Scripps outlets. Scripps News also will draw upon reporting from Scripps’ local newsrooms.

With the programming adjustments, “The Why” will now air weekly and premiere on Saturday evenings. Part of the teams producing “In the Loop” and “The Why” will transition to the live news team.

Scripps News, formerly Newsy, was founded in 2008 and was acquired by The E.W. Scripps Company in 2014. It transitioned from an OTT-delivered network to MVPD distribution. Then, on Oct. 1, 2021, it became a free over-the-air network, available with a digital antenna, as well as on streaming platforms.
