He’s a self-described serial entrepreneur, and an investor who happens to double as a university professor. With the FCC’s pending blessing, you’ll soon be able to call Dr. Rashad Richey a radio station owner, too.

Richey is well-known in Atlanta, where is hosts the Rashad Richey Morning Show on Audacy-owned WAOK-AM 1380 and is a Political Commentator for R&B sibling WVEE-FM “V-103.”

Now, through his Breaking Ground USA, he’s forged a 50/50 partnership with the Augustus Foundation that will see Breaking Ground become the licensee of 6kw Class A WHSL-FM 107.7 in Lisman, Ala., to the far east of Meridian, Miss., and Class D WALQ-AM 1130 in Carrville, Ala., which boasts a daytime signal heard in Montgomery and in Auburn.

“As a multimedia personality with more than 20 years of executive experience across multiple platforms, I am honored to make this announcement,” said Dr. Richey. “Local and free over the air radio remains a mainstay in the lives of virtually all Americans and communities are hungry for connection, content and creativity. I look forward to maintaining the investment and commitment to excellence and community service that have built and sustained these stations and am thankful to be able to expand their reach.”

The purchase price was not disclosed.

WHSL will air an Adult R&B format once the deal is closed. And, a plan is in the works to move the station’s transmitter closer to Meridian, Miss.

The Augustus Foundation, founded in 1979, released a statement that read in part, “…Dr. Rashad Richey is not only a scholar and media-personality, he’s an insightful leader with depth, heart and courage. We are more than thrilled about this partnership and look forward to future successes.”

Dr. Richey also serves as president of Rolling Out, one of the largest Black-owned free print urban publications in the country.
