Potential Blip With Drone Rules

droneWhile some in the broadcast industry eagerly await using drones, some are not happy with the FAA’s new rules governing their use.

Here’s why.

Technically, the new rules, which would allow businesses like broadcasters to use drones to cover news events, traffic or even check their towers, take effect in 60 days.

But one man has challenged a portion of the rules in court. John Taylor is an attorney and flies drones as a hobby.

He’s challenged the drone registry in the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, saying it’s illegal. Drones are different than regular aircraft and should be treated differently, he says in the brief, calling the requirement arbitrary and capricious.

The FAA requires registration of all drones, even those for commercial use, weighing more than 250 grams.
