An NPR intern is hospitalized in stable condition after being stabbed Wednesday morning on her way to work at the radio network headquarters in Washington, DC. A suspect is in custody.

NPR declined to identify the intern, but WUSA-TV reported that she is 20-year-old Annie Ropeik. The apparently unprovoked attack came about two blocks from NPR headquarters. The intern was stabbed in the neck.

Police credited passersby with both coming to the victim’s aide and preventing the attacker from getting away. Two men reportedly tackled the attacker after she dropped her knife and began to walk away. 24-year old Melodie Brevard has been charged with assault with intent to kill.

“An NPR intern was attacked this morning at 7th and ‘I’ street on the way to work. The intern was aided by people on the scene, and is reported to be in stable condition at an area hospital. The entire staff is shocked and deeply concerned, and we are maintaining close contact with the family,” said a brief statement issued by NPR.
