NEXTGEN TV Supporters Seek FCC Stop To ‘5G Broadcast’ Ask

0

When it comes to the ongoing quest to bring ATSC 3.0-powered broadcast television and NEXTGEN TV to its fullest potential, the National Association of Broadcasters and the broadcast TV station ownership group shepherding the transition from ATSC 1.0 transmissions have been the loudest advocates of making the transition.

The LPTV Broadcasters Association and its founder, Frank Copsidas, see things differently. For low-power television stations, ATSC 3.0 conversion is costly and doesn’t have the benefits that another technology, 5G Broadcast, can offer. That belief is what fueled a Petition for Rulemaking that would authorize permissive use of the 3GPP 5G Broadcast transmission standard for LPTV stations under Part 74 of the Commission’s rules.

The NAB and Sinclair Inc. have each told the Commission to not proceed with an affirmative nod to MB Docket No. 26-263.
