A local media executive with years of experience in markets including Raleigh-Durham, where he’s been VP/GM of Capitol Broadcasting Co.’s two broadcast TV stations for seven years, has been tapped as President/GM of WCAU-10 and Telemundo sibling WWSI-62 in Philadelphia.

He’ll begin his new duties on St. Patrick’s Day.

Taking the position, starting March 17, is Joel Davis.

He’ll report to NBCUniversal Local Chairman Valari Staab, and work closely with Telemundo Station Group President José Cancela and NBC Sports Regional Networks President Bill Bridgen.

Davis will be tasked with providing “strategic and operational leadership” of the NBC and Telemundo stations across all platforms serving viewers across the Delaware Valley.

“Joel is a proven local media executive whose experience, passion and strategic leadership has guided success and growth across broadcast, streaming and digital media platforms in several markets,” Staab said. “We are pleased he is joining our Philadelphia properties to further their impact on the communities they serve.”

Since 2018, Davis has served as Vice President/General Manager of NBC affiliate WRAL-5 and FOX affiliate WRAZ-50 in Raleigh. These stations are technology pioneers in the digital age, adopting ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 and embracing NEXTGEN TV ahead of nearly any other TV operation in the U.S.

Davis also oversaw the launch of “WRAL News+,” a 24/7 local news streaming channel simulcast, on WNGT in Raleigh-Durham.

At WRAL & WRAZ, Station Manager Heather Gray will serve as interim General Manager. She’s been with the station since joining in 2017 as Creative Services Director.

Prior to joining Capitol Broadcasting Co., Davis led KGTV-10 in San Diego and the market’s Azteca América station, KZSD. He held that role from 2014, first as station manager and then as General Manager. He joined KGTV as News Director in 2009. Davis has also led newsrooms at stations in Orlando, Fresno and Bakersfield and has on-air reporting experience. In fact, the Iowa native began his career as an investigative research intern while attending Iowa State University, where he earned a journalism degree.

Davis also serves as President of the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters and Chair of Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism Advisory Council.
