He’s been associated with Hearst Television since 1983 and has served in various roles at flagship property WCVB-5 in Boston, as well as in a key ad operations role. Now, the privately held broadcast TV station licensee is celebrating this company veteran’s longtime retirement.

Marc Mekler will conclude a 43-year career at the end of 2026. His entire professional time has been spent at Hearst Television.

Across his tenure at Hearst, he has played an integral role in the TV station licensee’s initiative to consolidate its station ad operations serving 27 markets into a single Charlotte-based hub. That effort saw Mekler, as Director of Ad Operations, relocate to Charlotte. He held that role from 2006 until his 2023 promotion to Senior Director of Ad Operations.

Mekler began his career at WCVB-5 as an ad traffic specialist, earning promotions to Assistant Traffic Manager, Traffic Manager, and, ultimately Corporate Director of Commercial Operations. After 23 years at WCVB, he was promoted to the executive leadership ranks.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate to spend my entire career at Hearst,” Mekler said. “The company has given me so many opportunities, including the chance to help build the Ad Operations Hub in Charlotte. But what I’m most grateful for are the people I’ve worked with along the way. Their support, encouragement, and friendship have meant so much to me and have played a tremendous role in my journey.”

Hearst Television President Michael J. Hayes commented, “Marc has been a thought leader and innovator in our ad operations group for more than four decades. He has helped imagine and build the backbone of our operational infrastructure from the station level to its present-day service center while supporting our advertisers and our markets with the vast benefits of his extraordinary expertise.”

Also commenting on Mekler’s upcoming retirement is Hearst Television CFO John Drain. “Marc has been at the center of broadcast TV ad operations’ evolution—from paper-based processes to digital platforms,” he said. “He is a highly respected thought leader in the broadcast industry — among peer broadcasters, technology providers, advertising agencies, and other industry partners. Marc also played a vital role on the project team that helped enable us to provide linear TV ad addressability using broadcast streams. I am proud to have had him on our team and to have had a front-row seat to his leadership, innovation, and the admiration he earned from his colleagues.”

Among other industry roles, Mekler has been an active member for many years of the TV Interface Practice (TIP) Committee, a working consortium formed by local television broadcasters dedicated to promoting open interfaces to streamline advertising transactions for broadcasters and their media agency partners.

Mekler has also been a regular participant in mentoring colleagues through the Hearst Television mentoring program.
