The production studio of former PBS affiliate KCET-TV are being sold to the Church of Scientology as the station continues its transformation into a completely independent non-commercial entity. Station management said this is part of Phase 2 of the metamorphosis.

The value of the deal was not disclosed.

KCET said it plans to continue to produce its own programming and is in negotiation with undisclosed production facility operators for access going forward. It is hoping that a deal will actually expand its capabilities.

KCET President CEO Al Jerome commented, “We are now implementing Phase Two of our transformation from a PBS affiliate to an independent public media center for the 21st century. New facilities and equipment will allow us to augment the quality, award-winning content that our fans love.”

KCET notes that its lineup includes a mix of noncommercial fare that touches on the arts, entertainment, cooking, nature and science, and children’s shows. It also provides local and international use from a wide variety of sources.

In addition to giving up its production facility, it will be exiting its current location on Sunset Boulevard, but will stay put for about a year.
