In March, the White House announced 25% tariffs on all cars coming into the country. Ford estimates $2.5 billion in added annual costs. Toyota projects a 21% drop in operating profit for its fiscal year ending in March 2026. Some manufacturers are already passing those costs to consumers, to the tune of thousands of dollars.
Consumers are pivoting.
Analysts warn that sustained high vehicle prices could shrink annual sales by more than a million units. In April, used car costs jumped to their highest level since 2023, according to Cox Automotive — and analysts predict that value will only climb.
