Here’s a deal you don’t see every day

SoldRobert and Ashley Stevens are using two different licensee names as they pick up a pair of FMs in the area where West Virginia and Pennsylvania are a stone’s throw from each other. And there is another major oddity.

The stations are in the Morgantown-Clarksburg WV market.

WRIJ-FM is licensed to Masontown PA. WKJL-FM is licensed to Clarksburg.

The seller is non-commercial He’s Alive Incorporated. VP Melissa Flores signed off on the transfer application.

The buyers are using the name Broadcast Communications Inc. is picking up the Masontown station and Broadcast Educational Communications Inc. is getting the Clarksburg station. The price will be $375,000 cash. The lion’s share of that will go for WRIJ-FM. It’s valued at $350K, while WKJL-FM is valued at the remaining $25K.

The price is $375,000. And here’s oddity #1 – the lion’s share of that is allocated to the weaker station. That’s because the $350K WRIJ will be going commercial, while $25J WKJL has no choice but to remain a non-profit.

WRIJ-FM is a Class A on 106.9 MHz with 980 W @ 810’. It doesn’t get Clarksburg but does a good job covering Morgantown and points north. It even gets a fringe signal into a sliver of Pittsburgh.

WKJL-FM is a Class B on 88.1 MHz with 19 kW @ 489’. It of course has no problem serving its city of license. Its primary contour doesn’t quite make it over Morgantown, but it does get a secondary contour there.

The Stevens’ have a lot of other stations in the area:
* WKVE-FM 103.1 Mount Pleasant PA shares a similar contour with WRIJ-FM
* WKFB-AM 770 Jeanette PA, serves a good bit of Pittsburgh.
* WKHB-AM 620 Irwin PA and WANB-AM 1210 Waynesburg PA are to WRIJ’s west.
* WMSG-AM 1050 and WWHQ-FM 92.3 Oakland MD and WKHJ-FM 104.5 Mountain Lake Park MD are all east of Morgantown.
