One of the original managers of the AM radio station serving The Villages — a city built expressly for retirees near Leesburg, Fla. — who is the owner of another AM serving New Smyrna Beach, Fla., has died.

Clement “Skip” Diegel passed away on Tuesday (1/16).

Through his Diegel Communications, he is the licensee of Adult Standards WSBB-AM 1230 in New Smyrna Beach, a 1kw 1-tower Class C covering a community due south of Daytona Beach.

He’s also associated with Class B WVLG-AM 640 in Wildwood, serving The Villages as a unique voice for the elder American community. Diegel led WVLG from 2001 to 2008, when he purchased WSBB.

Diegel began his career at WAAM-AM in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he later took on the role of General Manager. His radio management extended to other stations, including WKHM in Jackson and WFGR in Grand Rapids, Mich.
