First Quarter Stocks a Study in Contrasts

It’s time to put on a helmet and strap in – we’re going to take a close up and personal look at how the RBR+TVBR stock chart has changed since the old dude representing 2014 exited stage left and the cherub of 2015 took the spotlight. A lot has changed between then and the end of March.

The stock stability award goes to Entercom – its three-month ride resulted in a loss of one penny per share, a barely measureable decrease of 0.08%

Only a handful of stocks registered value changes in the single digits, and none were that close to maintaining equilibrium.

In general, the television stocks we follow did much better than radio as a group.

They were led by Gray, which was up by 23.3%; and Sinclair, up 14.8%.

Fox had the roughest time of it, losing 11.89% of its value.

Radio was volatile, with far bigger swings on both sides of the positive-negative divide.

Radio One was far and away the big winner of all broadcast companies we follow, gaining 84.43% during the quarter. SBS also did well, up 39.31%.

Salem, on the other hand, had a difficult time, surrendering 21.23%.

But the biggest losses were recorded by the biggest companies: iHeart was down 35.37% and Cumulus was down 41.61%. In April Cumulus has stabilized and iHeart has been enjoying a winning streak, but both will have a ways to go to get back to where they were on New Year’s Day.
