Erie News Anchor’s Death By Suicide Confirmed

The passing of an Erie, Pa. news anchor employed by locally based Lilly Broadcasting has been determined to be a death by suicide.


Emily Matson, a key member of the “Erie News Now” reporter and anchor team, took her own life and was struck by a train in Fairview, Pa., on Monday. The Erie County Coroner’s Office Report was shared by The Erie Times-News.

Matson was aged 42. Her death was noted by Erie News Now online and on-air, with the Lilly family issuing a statement on December 11.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of our beloved Erie News Now news anchor Emily Matson,” The family said. “Emily was a shining light in our newsroom, delivering news with a passion and love she had for the Erie community and Northwest Pennsylvania. We loved Emily dearly and our hearts go out to the Matson family and her husband Ryan at this time.”

An Erie native, Matson had been associated with Lilly since joining NBC affiliate WICU-TV in 2004. In that time, she had co-anchored both the 7pm and 11pm newscasts.
