EMF upgrades in VA Tidewater

The Delmarva Educational Association has agreed to sell WAZP-FM to Educational Media Foundation, giving it its first full power outlet in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News market.

The station is already in the noncommercial band – not necessarily a requirement for this frequent-buyer non-profit. It’s a Class B on 90.7 MHz licensed to Cape Charles VA.

EMF, headed by Mike Novak and operator of the K-LOVE Contemporary Christian Network, will pay $4M for the station, including $1M cash and a note for the balance.

The seller is headed by Nancy Epperson, who has interests in several other Religion-oriented radio groups. There’s Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting Corporation, Truth Broadcasting Corporation, River Educational Media, and the big one – Salem Communications Corporation. Her husband Stuart W. Epperson Jr. is a top exec at Salem.

EMF has a presence in the Norfolk market, but it’s with a pair of translators, W227BR Portsmouth and W245DB Newport News.
