The Monterey-Salinas area has long been home to Hispanic farm workers, thanks to its artichoke, garlic and strawberry fields.
Many of these consumers are evangelical Christians. As such, a Hispanic broadcast ministry is investing in a Class B AM that will soon become its local broadcast home.
KKMC-AM 880, licensed to Gonzales, Calif., is a Class B facility with 2 towers used for 10kw during daytime hours and 3 towers in use after dark.
The station is being sold to El Sembrador Ministries of Chatsworth, Calif., by Monterey County Broadcasters.
A Form 302 application is being filed that will convert KKMC to non-profit status.
With KKMC, El Sembrador will have three stations within the Nielsen Audio-defined Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz market, as it already is the licensee of KRXA-AM in Carmel Valley and KMBX-AM in Soledad.
However, KKMC has a superior signal over most of the market compared to the other two stations.
The current programming is already religious in nature, as “Central Coast Christian Radio.” It uses an FM translator at 97.3 MHz, and this facility is not included in the transaction.
El Sembrador is paying $335,000 for KKMC. A $25,000 deposit has been made to Sandi Bergman, of MyMediaBroker.com, the broker of record in this transaction.
