Cury Adds KVUE To TEGNA/Austin Leadership Duties

For eleven years, he has served as President/GM of KENS-TV in Austin, joining the TEGNA-owned CBS affiliate after a role as Director of Sales for ABC-affiliated sibling WFAA-TV in Dallas. Now, he’s adding similar responsibilities for TEGNA’s ABC affiliate in Texas’ state capital.

Tom Cury will be expanding his leadership duties to TEGNA sibling KVUE-TV, overseeing news, content, sales, marketing, digital operations and community engagement for both that station and KENS-TV.

At KVUE, Cury succeeds Byron Wilkinson, who was recently promoted to VP of Ad Sales for TEGNA’s Texas and Mid-South regions.

And, it is another appointment at the “hold separate” unit of Nexstar Media Group designed to present a firm wall between Nexstar-licensed and TEGNA-aligned stations under the same corporate umbrella as ongoing federal antitrust litigation proceeds in a California courtroom.

In Austin, Nexstar owns NBC affiliate KXAN-TV, MyNetwork TV-aligned KBVO-TV and the market’s home for The CW Network, KNVA-TV.

Had federal judge Troy Nunley not put a “hold separate” order in place, Nexstar would effectively own and operate five stations in the Austin DMA. For the Carr Commission, that could be perfectly fine, as the Republican-dominated agency in a 2-1 party line vote in August erased a Congressionally mandated 39% national TV audience reach cap.

Commenting on the expanded role for Cury, TEGNA Sr. VP/Group GM Brad Ramsey commented, “Tom will bring our Austin and San Antonio teams closer together, creating more opportunities to collaborate while ensuring each station continues to reflect and serve its unique community. Building on the strengths of both stations, Tom will help us accelerate momentum, deepen audience connection, and create even greater value for our customers and partners.”

Cury’s career began in 1990 as a New York-based national account executive for Petry Television. In 1993, he joined CBS Television Stations, embarking on a 17-year tenure that included roles as Local Sales Manager for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, National Sales Manager for WFOR-TV in Miami, and VP/Sales for both WFOR-TV and WBFS-TV from 2006-2010.

“At KENS, I’ve worked closely with our team to turn good ideas into solutions that drive results for our advertisers and into programming that our audiences seek out and enjoy,” Cury said. “KVUE shares that innovative spirit and I’m ready to work with the team there to continue to create content and coverage that serves Austin.”

Tom Cury earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from American University in Washington, D.C.
