Curtis’s First State Take Secures WPTF’s FM Translator

For listeners in the Triangle region of North Carolina, a 150-watt FM translator serving the Cary and Raleigh areas as a simulcast partner of a big 50kw Class B News/Talker has been operated via an LMA by Curtis Media Group.

Now, it is buying the FM translator outright, securing an FM home for the spoken word station serving market No. 38.

Curtis licensee First State Communications is agreeing to purchase W253CY at 98.5 MHz in Cary from Conner Media Corp.

The translator is the FM component of WPTF-AM 680 in the Raleigh-Durham-Cary market, and Curtis’s First State is paying $185,000 for the FM translator.

It’s a fairly new facility, with a CP granted by the Commission in August 2018. It must protect Class C3 WDWG-FM in Rocky Mount, N.C., due east of Raleigh.

In November 2018, Conner agreed to an LMA with Curtis that saw it pocketing $1,000 a month so Curtis could use it as an FM home for WPTF.

With the agreement set to expire on May 21, Curtis decided to make a purchase, rather than extend the LMA.
