An ‘LAist’ Trades Alvarado Street For San Antonio

LOS ANGELES — In March, Joyce Slocum died after a long illness, leaving Texas Public Radio with a leadership void. Now, San Antonio-based TPR has announced who its next President/CEO will be. Getting the role is the VP of Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives at Pasadena City College-based KPCC-FM 89.3, which broadcasts as “LAist” to Southern California.

Getting the role at Spoken Word KSTX-FM, Classical KPAC-FM and five repeater stations within the TPR family covering the Alamo City and neighboring Hill Country is Ashley Alvarado.

Alvarado won the job following a national executive search conducted in partnership with Iris Dayton-Spann of Stanton Chase to seek Slocum’s successor. She joins TPR in December.

TPR VP/Development and Membership Rebecca Caven has served as interim President/CEO of the organization since Slocum’s passing, overseeing operations and its strategic planning efforts.

Alvarado’s background is as a journalist, with experience at the Center for Investigative Reporting. She has been a coach and mentor for multiple journalism organizations such as Blue Engine, Poynter, and the American Press Institute.

During her tenure at LAist, Alvarado led efforts in community engagement and managed multiple strategic initiatives, including the organization’s diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies. She played a key role in LAist’s digital transformation and has overseen various budgets and grant portfolios.
