In Tuesday’s RBR + TVBR TRANSACTIONS TODAY we shared details about a change in command at a group of radio stations in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Today, our Transactions Trawler’s port of call is the Bahía de Guayanilla, just west of Ponce, Puerto Rico. It’s where an AM playing a Spanish-language cover of ABBA’s “Gimme Gimme Gimme” right before Chicago’s “Hard To Say I’m Sorry/Get Away” in the midday hours is found, and that station has just been sold.
Meanwhile, a Form 314 filing with the FCC reveals the price Educational Media Foundation is paying for WBRU-FM 95.5 in Providence.
With an unusual power-up after dark, Class B WOIZ-AM 1130 in Guayanilla, P.R., boasts a very formidable non-directional signal over most of western Puerto Rico, reaching Arecibo, Mayaguez and Ponce with 200 watts during daylight hours and 700 watts at night from 1 tower within view of Carretera No. 2, above the beach of Guayanilla Bay.
When the weather is right, WOIZ, branded as “Radio Antillas,” can be heard as far east as St. Thomas in the USVI, and as far west as the resort city of Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.
This could be one of the attraction points of WOIZ to a veteran of Puerto Rico radio: Aurio A. Matos Barreto. He’s agreed to purchase the station from Radio Antillas de Harriet Broadcasters and its owner, Luis Adan Rodríguez, for $200,000.
Matos Barreto has made a $10,000 deposit for Radio Antillas, which airs a Spanish-language, live-and-local Full Service format that includes news updates from Univision Radio’s WKAQ-AM 580 in San Juan.
At closing, Matos Barreto will made a second payment of $40,000 against the purchase price. Then, the remaining balance will be paid in 10 monthly installments of $1,500.
The station’s building and land are not included in the transaction, which gives Matos Barrero WOIZ’s license, transmission tower, transmitters and studio equipment at present conditions.
Matos Barrero is the president and 100% stockholder of La Más Z Radio, owner of WBYM-AM 1560 & WCMA-AM 1600 in Bayamon (San Juan), and WDNO-AM 960 in Quebradillas, P.R.
The seller’s legal counsel in this transaction is Francisco Montero of Fletcher Heald & Hildreth.
TRANSACTIONS TODAY UPDATE:
- Educational Media Foundation is paying $5,630,000 for WBRU-FM 95.5 in Providence, which is being sold by Brown Broadcasting Service. New call letters WLVO will be put in place just after 12am on Friday, Sept. 1, when a format change from Alternative to Christian Contemporary will occur. WLVO will air EMF’s “KLOVE” format, as previously reported.
- Positive News Network, owner of WMNO-CD in Marion, Ohio, is seeing the sale of 100% of the company’s stock from Mark Hiner to Jason Litton.
