MIAMI — The founder and President/CEO of Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) will be the focal point of a special tribute during the opening ceremony of this year’s XXI World Summit on Political Communication, a major event in the Spanish-speaking media world taking place at Florida International University later this month.
Raúl Alarcón Jr. will be honored on the morning of November 21, at the start of the three-day event inviting communication experts, journalists, academics, and political leaders from various nations.
Alarcón is being honored for “his vision and commitment,” which “have been crucial in strengthening the role of media as agents of inclusion and representation.”
Alarcón followed in the footsteps of his father, Cuban broadcasting pioneer Pablo Raúl Alarcón Sr., who fled the regime of Fidel Castro and became a pillar of Spanish-language radio on the East Coast of the U.S. In 1983, Raúl Alarcón Jr. helped in the creation of SBS, which was founded with the purchase of WVNJ-AM in Secaucus, N.J. at a time its FM sibling was acquired by Malrite Communications and turned into WHTZ “Z100.”

During the Cumbre Mundial de la Comunicación Política, more than 150 speakers, 600 attendees, and representatives from 25 countries will discuss the latest trends in political communication and marketing. Topics will include “Politics and New Technologies,” “Government Communication,” “Media and Public Opinion,” “Youth and Politics,” “Electoral Campaigns,” “Women in Politics,” and the Latino vote.
