Despite facing “Idol” in the time period this year, the ABC unscripted series generated double-digit year-to-year gains in the hour with Total Viewers (+21%) and Adults 18-49 (+22% – ), over an original episode of “FlashForward” on the year-ago evening (6.2 million and 1.8/6 on 3/25/10).

“Grey’s Anatomy” (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Returning to original for the first time in 4 weeks (since 2/24/11) to stand as Thursday’s #1 scripted series, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” led Thursday’s 9 o’clock hour by 1.3 million viewers (10.1 million vs. 8.8 million – Fox’s “Bones”) and by 24% in Adults 18-49 (3.6/10 vs. 2.9/8 – NBC’s “The Office”/”Parks and Recreation”) over its nearest competition.  Grey’s registered as the No. 1 scripted series in the slot among Adults 18-49 for its 17th straight original broadcast this season.

“Private Practice” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Surging week to week by 2.0 million viewers (8.0 million vs. 6.0 million) and by 42% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/7 vs. 1.9/6), “Private Practice” drew its biggest audience since mid-November (a 19-week high) and its highest Adult 18-49 rating since the beginning of December (a 17-week high) – since 11/18/10 and 12/2/10, respectively.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 40% currently, from 36% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
