ABC had best week since NBA Finals

Overall: Gaining audience for the 2nd week (+5%), ABC marked its most-watched week since the NBA Finals 6 weeks ago – since w/o 6/17/13. ABC’s The Bachelorette hit new season highs to finish as a Top 5 TV show in Adults 18-49 (#5) and a Top 10 show in Total Viewers (#7).  ABC’s 20/20 ranked as the week’s #1 newsmagazine in key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54). The Net was up from the same week last year by 1.2 million viewers and by 25% in Adults 18-49.


Monday: With increasing numbers from The Bachelorette and Mistresses, ABC won Monday in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 over CBS.  Hitting summer highs on the night, the Net marked its strongest summer Monday in more than 1 year in viewers and young adults – since 6/11/12 and 7/9/12, respectively.  From 8-10pm, The Bachelorette (part 1 of a 2-part season finale) dominated its 2-hour time period, defeating NBC’s unscripted combo (American Ninja Warrior/Get Out Alive with Bear Grylls) by a best-yet 3.4 million viewers and by 71% in Adults 18-49.  Spiking week to week in Total Viewers (+22%) and Adults 18-49 (+26%), The Bachelorette achieved season-highs on both counts.  During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s Mistresses more than doubled the audience of NBC’s Siberia, and led by 71% in Adults 18-49.  The ABC drama matched 7-week highs in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 – since 6/10/13.  On average season to date, Mistresses is boosting its time period for ABC by strong double-digit percentages in Total Viewers (+29%) and Adults 18-49 (+42%)

Tuesday: From 8-10pm, ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss increased its Adult 18-49 delivery 9% week to week to equal a season high.  Up against strong unscripted competition from NBC’s America’s Got Talent and Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance during the 9 o’clock hour, Extreme Weight Loss grew by double-digit percentages from its first hour to its second hour in viewers (+12%) and young adults (+30%).  In fact from 9-10pm, Extreme Weight Loss nearly caught the second hour of So You Think You Can Dance in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, pacing within 100k viewers and 1-tenth of a rating point (tying in audience share).

Wednesday: Building on its lead-in during Wednesday’s 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s The Lookout was up week to week in Total Viewers (+21%) and Adults 25-54 (+8%), hitting 5-week highs on both measures – since 6/26/13.  The ABC newsmagazine held even in Adults 18-49, tying its best number since mid-June – since 6/19/13.  The Lookout improved its hour year to year by double-digit margins in Total Viewers (+35%), Adults 25-54 (+30%) and Adults 18-49 (+29%) over original programming on the year-ago night.

Thursday: With Wipeout, Motive and Rookie Blue, ABC finished as the 2nd-most-watched TV network on Thursday night. At 8pm, ABC’s Wipeout was up by double-digits week to week in viewers (+18%) and young adults (+20%), tying its highest Adult 18-49 rating of the summer.  During the 9 o’clock hour, ABC’s Motive drew more viewers than NBC’s The Winner Is for the 4th straight week, leading by 5%.  In addition, the ABC freshman drama held even week to week among Adults 18-49 and was up 20% in Adults 18-34 to deliver a 5-week high – since 06/27/13. Surging over its lead-in with viewers (+13%) and young adults (+25%), ABC’s Rookie Blue ranked the most-watched TV series during Thursday’s 10pm hour for the 4th consecutive week, outdrawing NBC’s Hollywood Game Night in the time period by 1.0 million viewers.  On average, Rookie Blue is up 5% over the same point last summer to deliver its most-watched season in 3 years – since 2010.

Friday: From 8-9pm, ABC’s repeat Shark Tank stood as the most-watched show overall in the hour and topped its network rivals in Adults 18-49 for the 2nd week in a row. Shark Tank grew week to week by 9% in Adults 18-49 to deliver its highest-rated encore telecast since the beginning of June – since 6/7/13. In the 9 o’clock hour, ABC’s Would You Fall For That? ranked #1 on the major networks (tied with the first hour of NBC’s Dateline) in both Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54. Would You Fall For That? was up over its week-ago debut by 13% in Adults 18-49 and by 8% in Adults 25-54. ABC’s 20/20 shot up week to week by 38% in Adults 18-49 and by 15% in Adults 25-54 to match 6-week highs – since 6/21/13.

Sunday: Surging over its lead-in at 8pm with viewers (+24%) and young adults (+33%) and growing from start to finish opposite NBC’s Sunday Night Football (Hall of Fame Game), the season premiere of Secret Millionaire delivered a summer high for ABC with regular programming in the hour among Total Viewers and the Net’s best Adult 18-49 number since June (since 6/23/13). In addition, Secret Millionaire was up over its performance on the same night last year by 1.4 million viewers and by 50% in Adults 18-49 (on 08/05/12).  Secret Millionaire topped its year-ago finale (on 8/12/12) in viewers (+25%) and young adults (+20%), posting the series’ best numbers since July 15, 2012.  During the 9 o’clock hour, ABC’s Whodunnit? improved its time period year to year by strong margins in viewers (+20%) and young adults (+43%) over original programming on the year-ago night.
