ABC delivers #1 scripted show

ABCOverall: During the week of 01/21/13, ABC aired 4 of the week’s Top 20 TV programs in Adults 18-49, and for the 2nd week in a row delivered the #1 scripted program with Modern Family:  Modern Family – #3, Grey’s Anatomy – #12, while The Bachelor and The Middle tied at #17.  ABC was the only major network up year to year, building over the same week last year by 6% in Adults 18-49.


Monday: With The Bachelor and Castle on the rise, ABC delivered its top rated Monday among Adults 18-49 with regular programming since November 19, 2012. ABC ranked #1 on the night with Adults 18-34, Women 18-34 (2nd week in a row) and Women 18-49.   Building for the 2nd straight week in Adults 18-49 (+4%), ABC’s The Bachelor beat NBC’s The Biggest Loser 14 in head-to-head competition from 8–10pm.  The ABC unscripted series continued to lead its time slot among its core audience of Women 18-34 and stood as Monday’s #1 series for the 3rd straight week.  The Bachelor hit season highs across all key Adult demos (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54).  In fact, the show delivered 16-month highs for ABC in the 2-hour time period in Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34 – since 9/19/11.  During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s Castle more than doubled the audience of NBC’s Deception (+144%) and led by increasing margins with key Adults: AD18-49 (+54%) and AD25-54 (+73%).  Gaining 5% week to week in Adults 18-49, Castle equaled its highest rating since October – since 10/29/12.  In addition, the ABC drama earned the series’ best Adult 18-34 rating in nearly 1 year – since 2/27/12.

Tuesday: With the debut of The Taste and the series finale of Private Practice, ABC ranked #1 on Tuesday in Adults 18-49, leading by double digits over Fox (+12%), NBC (+19%) and CBS (+27%).  ABC’s The Taste opened at #1 from 8-10pm among Adults 18-49, beating original comedy programming on Fox by 24% and NBC by 40%.  In fact it was Tuesday’s top-rated TV show, ranking #1 in each half hour and gaining young adult audience throughout its premiere.  The new show gained young adult audience throughout its premiere, building by 16% from its first half-hour to its final half-hour.  The Taste earned ABC’s strongest non-sports Adult 18-49 rating in the 2-hour slot since November (since 11/27/12) and tied the Dancing premiere in September (on 9/25/12).  Among Adults 18-49, The Taste is ABC’s top in-season unscripted debut in nearly 2 years and the 2nd highest on any net since The X-Factor opened in September 2011 – since 3/6/11 and 9/22/11, respectively. Spiking week to week in Total Viewers (+29%) and Adults 18-49 (+25%), ABC’s Private Practice closed out with the show’s highest numbers in 15 weeks – since 10/9/12.

Wednesday: ABC ranked #2 on Wednesday night in Adults 18-49 to a 2-hour Idol-driven Fox. ABC’s Modern Family was once again Wednesday’s #1 scripted TV show across all key Adult demos (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54). At 8pm, ABC’s The Middle grew week to week in Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 18-49 (+9%) to 10-week highs on both measures (since 11/14/12), and ranked as the #1 scripted show in its half-hour.  At 8:30pm, The Neighbors built over the prior week in viewers (+5%) and young adults (+11%) and was the top-rated scripted show in its slot among Adults 18-49. The new ABC comedy posted its 2nd highest Adult 18-49 number since November 7, 2012.  Spiking over its lead-in at 9pm (+110%), ABC’s Modern Family led its nearest scripted competition in the half-hour by 35% in Adults 18-49 (CBS’ Criminal Minds). Modern Family was up week to week with Adults 18-34 (+6%).  In the 9:30pm half-hour, ABC’s Suburgatory held 100% of its overall audience week to week was up week with Adults 18-34 (+6%).  During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s Nashville took second to CBS’ CSI in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, while winning in the hour with Women 18-34 for its 3rd straight telecast. Season to date, Nashville is one of the Top 5 biggest percentage gainers in TV playback and the top new show (tied w/Revolution), jumping by 63% in Adults 18-49 (+1.2 rating points – from a 1.9 L+SD rating to a 3.1 L+7 rating). The ABC freshman drama also adds on 2.8 million viewers to its preliminary L+SD tally in the L+7 finals (6.2 million to 9.0 million).

Thursday: With a mix of original and repeat programming, ABC ranked #2 on Thursday in Adults 18-49 to an Idol-led Fox, outperforming NBC’s all-original lineup on the night by 54%. More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in (+150%) at 9pm, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy won its hour to finish as Thursday’s #1 drama.  During the 9 o’clock hour, Grey’s moved past Fox’s Idol-driven Glee by 15% and beat NBC’s original comedies by 88% (The Office/1600 Penn).  Grey’s was up week to week in Total Viewers (+2%) and held 100% in Adults 18-49.  In addition, the ABC drama gained among Women 18-34 (+5%) to deliver its highest rating since October 4, 2012.  ABC’s Scandal repeat won the 10 o’clock hour among Adults 18-49, besting CBS’ Elementary replay by 13% and NBC’s first-run Rock Center with Brian Williams by 113%.  Scandal was the #1 series in its slot for its 6th consecutive broadcast with young adults.  In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, Scandal marked its highest-ever repeat numbers, topping its previous encore highs by 56% and 89%, respectively.  Continuing to improve its time period year to year, the Scandal replay doubled the year-ago Private Practice repeat in the hour with viewers (+100%) and young adults (+113%).

Friday: At 9pm, ABC’s repeat Shark Tank topped each of its network rivals in Adults 18-49, beating NBC with an original Dateline by 17%, Fox’s replay The Following by 27% and CBS’ encore CSI: NY by 40%. ABC’s 20/20 beat the second hour of NBC’s Dateline head-to-head by 6% in the key Adult 25-54 news demo to rank #1 in the 10 o’clock hour. The ABC newsmagazine also outdelivered its NBC and CBS competition (Blue Bloods) in Adults 18-49. 20/20 was up week to week in Total Viewers (+5%), Adults 18-49 (+17%) and Adults 25-54 (+13%).

Sunday: From 7-8pm against NBC’s AFC/NFC Pro Bowl coverage, ABC’s replay America’s Funniest Home Videos ranked as the #2 program in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ original 60 Minutes by 6% and Fox’s comedies (Bob’s Burgers/The Cleveland Show) by 80%. AFV hit a season high in the young adult demo, while scoring its best repeat number in over 2 years – since 12/12/10.
