He started working at this San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose TV station as the weekend meteorologist in 1992, after stints at KPIX-5; KFTY-50 in Santa Rosa, Calif.; and at KRON-4 during the late 1980s, when it was an NBC affiliate.
Now, a 33-year tenure at KTVU-2 is coming to an end for meteorologist Bill Martin.
In a staff announcement, KTVU VP/News Director Simone Aponte said, “Bill joined KTVU in 1992 as the weekend meteorologist, bringing with him a deep knowledge of atmospheric science and a passion for storytelling. Over the years, he has become a trusted voice during the Bay Area’s most critical weather events. From his early coverage of the Oakland Hills fires to the San Bruno gas explosion, the Oroville Dam evacuations, and the devastating Camp Fire in Paradise—where he tragically lost the house he grew up in—Bill has guided viewers through some of Northern California’s most challenging moments with compassion and professionalism.”
Aponte added that Martin’s retirement marks the end of an era for KTVU, presently a FOX Television Stations O&O. It was previously owned by Cox Media Group.
In 2014, Martin was honored as one of a select group of meteorologists nationwide invited to meet with President Obama and his science advisors to discuss critical issues surrounding climate and climate change.
