A shield deferred, once again

The reporters shield is still stuck in the Senate Judiciary Committee, despite reports that key senators and the White House had arrived at a compromise version that appeared acceptable to all concerned parties.

The White House was able to resolve certain national security issues it had with the original bill, and sponsors were even able to expand its reach to include bloggers and independent journalists.

However, another busy committee agenda seems to have caused the bill to be shoved aside once again, and it had a lot of company in the held over category.

The committee passed three other bills, S.1490, Personal Data Privacy and Security Act of 2009; S.139, Data Breach Notification Act; and S. 1472, Human Rights Enforcement Act of 2009.

We believe the bill’s next appearance on the agenda will be its tenth.
