MBC Planning More FM Service For Grand Junction

The owner and operator of a group of radio stations serving Grand Junction, Colo., is preparing to bring another FM option to local listeners.

It will do so by way of an FM translator it has just acquired, and has a Construction Permit for a facility giving it full-market coverage.

MBC Grand Broadcasting is agreeing to purchase K270AY at 101.9 MHz, licensed to Battlement Mesa, Colo., from Professional Antenna, Tower and Translator Service (PATTS).

A $1,000 check is en route to PATTS, with $9,000 due at closing.

MBC Grand is led by David Hinson and presently operates nine broadcast brands in Grand Junction: News/Talk KNZZ-AM 1100/K224FE at 92.7 MHz; Classic Rock KSTR-FM 96.1; Country KMOZ-FM 92.3; Top 40 KMGJ-FM “Magic 93.1”; K280GQ Adult Hits/Adult Alternative hybrid “103.9 The Planet;” Oldies K239CP “95.7 The Monkey;” “The Team” Sports Network; and Adult Hits KKVT-FM 100.7 “The Vault.”

The Vault’s Class C1 signal feeds The Planet and The Monkey.

Now, it will feed K270AY, which is moving from a facility just below Chalk Mountain to a tower atop Black Ridge, allowing it to beam a city-grade signal over Grand Junction.

Richard Dean’s MBC Grand has enjoyed a “superduopoly” for more than 15 years. As RBR+TVBR reported in July 2004, it added a fourth FM to go with its two AMs in a $900,000 deal with Leggett Broadcasting that saw Jody McCoy of Media Services Group serve as the broker.

The deal gave MBC seven stations in the market, with an audience of roughly 100,000 aged 12 and older.
