A North Country Deal Sealed For Randy Michaels

It signed on the air in 2009 as a Class A FM serving the Adirondack Mountains town of Saranac Lake, N.Y. Since January, it has been one-half of a Variety Hits operation branded as “Lake FM,” with coverage of nearby Tupper Lake provided by that second FM.

Now, a deal is in the works sending the Class A to a new licensee.

It sees noted longtime media executive turned licensee Randy Michaels agreeing to its sale.

WSLP-FM 100.7, which adopted those call letters in early 2021 after taking the WPLA-FM calls in July 2020, has been sold.

The Ray Brook, N.Y.-licensed property is being purchased by North Country Radio Corp.

That’s the company led by President Jonathan Becker, and it is paying $45,000 for the FM.

With Marissa G. Repp serving as the legal counsel for Michaels’ Radioactive LLC, which shows his legal name as the President of the operation in FCC paperwork, the WSLP sale follows the December 2020 execution of a Local Programming and Marketing Agreement that allowed NCRC to take control of the station then-known as WPLA.

North Country Radio Corp is the licensee of what is now WPLA-FM, at 93.5 MHz in Warrensburg, in addition to WVSL-AM and W237EY. It is also the licensee of WLPW-FM in Lake Placid, N.Y.

As Michaels sheds his ownership of WSLP, North Country Radio Corp. is trading WPLA to the the Ricki Lee-led Border Media in exchange of WRGR-FM 102.1, the other half of the “Lake FM” simulcast.

Lee attracted national attention for being one of the first non-U.S. citizens to be granted FCC permission to own a radio station.
