He’s been the News Director for The E.W. Scripps Co.-owned CBS and The CW Network stations serving the Tidewater region of Virginia and, before that, held similar duties for Scripps’ NBC affiliate in Tulsa.
Now, he’s taking the ND reins at two properties under the CBS News and Stations banner serving Beantown.
Gerardo López will become the new VP/News Director for WBZ-4 and MyNetworkTV-affiliated former “Superstation” WSBK-38 in Boston.
He’ll also oversee the CBS News Boston streaming channel and CBSBoston.com, and he starts his new job on August 15.
López reports to CBS Boston President/GM Justin Draper, who said, “It is a pleasure to welcome Gerardo back to the CBS Stations family.”
Early in his career, López worked for KTVT-11, the CBS-owned station in Dallas-Fort Worth, as the station’s nightside assignment editor. He began his news career as an assignment editor at KEYE-42 in his hometown of Austin in the late 1990s, when the station was acquired by CBS; KEYE is now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.
Draper continued, “As I have gotten to know Gerardo during the past few weeks, it’s clear that he possesses a lot of great experience from working in several of the top local newsrooms in the country. His vision and values align with everything WBZ News stands for. I am excited to have him join us next month and work with our team to help us serve our viewers across our broadcast, streaming and digital platforms.”
López commented, “I am humbled and honored to lead the talented journalists at Boston’s first and finest television station. I want to thank Justin and Adrienne for the opportunity to join such a great team. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone at CBS Boston and being a part of a group of journalists that truly makes a difference in the communities we are so proud to serve.”
Lopez’s news background also includes positions with stations in Denver, Seattle, Houston and San Antonio. At present, he’s based at WTKR-3 and WGNT-27.
