FCC Formally Erases Congressionally-Mandated National TV Reach Cap

It was posted to FCC.gov with nary a word from the Federal Communications Commission, with a press release accompanying a 77-page Report and Order and statements from Chairman Brendan Carr and Commissioners Olivia Trusty and Anna M. Gómez. There was no e-mail distribution of the news, catching many journalists off-guard one day after a September Open Meeting that offered little hints that a decision had arrived.


The Republican-dominated FCC has formally adopted its vote to repeal its 39% national television ownership reach cap, replacing it with a granular, case-by-case review.

And while the R&O was released on the afternoon of October 1, the FCC’s three vote-making Commissioners adopted it on August 6, making the TV rule erasure concrete.
