WYFF-4 Leader Preparing For Retirement

He’s been with Hearst Television since 2006 and has enjoyed more than four decades in broadcast television. Now it is now that the President/GM of the company’s NBC affiliate serving Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., and Asheville-Hendersonville, N.C., will retire later this year.

This marks the conclusion of a career that saw John L. Humphries take the reins of WYFF-4 in 2016, after a four-year run as President/GM of WGAL-8 in Lancaster-Harrisburg-York, Pa.

Humphries’ successor will be announced at a later date.

Humphries’ career involves two tenures at WYFF. Before moving to Pennsylvania, he served as General Sales Manager of WYFF, from 2006-2012.

“John is a consummate broadcaster who led two of Hearst Television’s most honored and successful brands. He built upon the culture of excellence in journalism and community service in both markets,” said Hearst Television President Michael J. Hayes. “He leaves a powerful legacy of leadership and a strong foundation for the future of WYFF.”

Humphries commented, “Over the past 45 years it has been my privilege to serve alongside scores of passionate local broadcasters, all of whom were dedicated to making a difference in their communities. I am beyond blessed to have had the unique opportunity to conclude my career in leadership roles at two extraordinary Hearst Television properties.”

Earlier in his career, Humphries served as Director of Sales for WBTV-3 in Charlotte and in a similar role at WASV-TV & WSPA-TV in Greenville-Spartanburg. He became his career at WSOC-9 in Charlotte, initially as a production specialist and later as a sports reporter and anchor, before moving to sales positions there.

He is a graduate of Hearst’s executive development program, the Hearst Management Institute. Humphries is also a past president of the board of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association and the SCBA Educational Foundation, and he has served on the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB) Sales Advisory Committee.

WHO ARE THE TOP LOCAL TV LEADERS OF 2024?

Five autumns ago, the Radio + Television Business Report debuted its Top Local TV Leaders list — a first-ever honor roll saluting the hard work and passionate efforts of local television station leaders at a most difficult time for America. Today, local TV news has emerged as the first source for vital information, insight, and emergency details in communities ranging from Maui to Maine. Meanwhile, over-the-air television remains under attack — as one repeat Local TV Leader sees it — from advertisers who have flocked to digital media, even as the rise of citizen bloggers brings a new threat to verified news from journalists behind and in front of the camera. Challenges come and go with the years, yet broadcast TV remains resilient, important and a life-saving source of information in times of need.
We salute these 20 local television leaders in the RBR+TVBR Fall 2024 magazine, distributed November 11 to all subscribers.
